The Sony Ericsson’s G900 is a part of the Swedish-Japanese company’s series of the Web-enabled phones and it was announced at the Mobile World Congress this year.

Design

Placed side by side, the G700 and G900 may look much identical, but there are few subtle differences between the two. The most noticeable aspect is its patterned metallic silver strip that runs on edge with the G900. The G900 appears to sport the top row of few touch-sensitive soft keys, much similar to the K850i. But actually, these keys are the buttons on touch screen LCD. These were relatively fairly responsive while in use, we somehow had the actual buttons for the navigation. Just below its touch-sensitive keys are the two buttons dedicated for Messaging and Notes. The G700 too has the dedicated buttons for those very two functions, but the buttons are featured prominently less as the secondary nubs. The numeric pad of G900, though identical in size to that of G700, appears to offer tactility in less quantity.

Next, although its M2 expansion card slot still is stacked below its proprietary port, it is now hidden behind its battery cover which indeed requires some trials to open. This is not going to be the major issue until and unless you swap its flash media often. A dedicated key lock button is also relocated to the phone’s right edge to favor the right-handers. Whereas the G700 arrives only in Silk Bronze, the users of G900 have Dark Brown and dark Red shades to select from. The prototype unit that came to us was in Dark Brown, but looked much like the black instead. However, the G900 didn’t give us the feel as cool as G700, though it must appeal to the users who prefer to have conservative colors.

Features

The G900 is all that essentially, but ups its ante with the higher-resolution 5-mega pixel auto focus camera and the Wi-Fi connectivity. The unique feature of G900 is its touch focus function in the camera. The feature allows the users to set a focus area of a picture just by gently touching a point on its screen. Unfortunately, we were not able to test the touch focus function and the other touch-related features and functions such as browsing the photo album and the editing. But knowing that there are such functions available in G900 will certainly make it stand out against rest of the camera-phones present in the market.

Outlook
Besides its higher-resolution camera, the inclusion of the Wi-Fi feature probably is enough to make few people to consider G900 over G700. However on the ergonomics front, the G900 does have a little difference in comparison with G700.

The Sony Ericsson G900 is a tri-band phone with GSM 1900, GSM 1800 and GSM 900 networks. It has a candy bar form factor and has the dimensions recorded as 106×49x13 mm. The weight of the battery is calculated to be around 99 gms. The primary display type in the device is TFT and the secondary display resolution has x pixels. The input method is through the touch screen. The display size of the LCD is recorded as 2.4 inches with 240×320 pixel resolution, and of course it is a color LCD.

Coming to the performance side, the maximum calculated time is 12 hours and the maximum calculated standby time is recorded as 300 hours. It has 160 MB of internal memory with an Expansion Slot for memory Stick Micro. Apart from these, the other general features include MMS, predictive text input and has integrated vibrate alert features. As generally expected, it has an integrated digital camera with a maximum camera resolution of 5 mega pixels. The product is made available in two colors-Dark Brown or Dark Red.

In all, the Sony Ericsson’s G900 is a great phone, worth its cost!
